They have earned the respect of renowned publishers like Random House, Simon & Schuster, and Harper Collins, and have received the "Best Websites for Authors" and "Honoring Excellence" awards from the Association of Independent Authors. Reviewed By Cecelia Hopkins for Readers' Favorite

The Vow That Twisted Fate by Katherine D. Graham sees Queen Arlena don the angel pendant that had belonged to her ancestor Queen Valera. Soon after this, the phantom of Valera passes her a dwarven dagger. Despite being urged against carrying the dagger, Valera invokes the oath associated with the dagger. This summons Maevric Stormbender and his band of select warriors to her side. Can they help Arlena defend her kingdom from an evil that arises after a gap of 500 years? What is the mysterious connection between Valera, Arlena, and the evil Maedra? The kingdom must be made safe for her sister Elzie.

The Vow That Twisted Fate by Katherine D. Graham is a work of high fantasy. I thought Arlena was brave and gave a lot of herself for the peace and safety of her people. Her relationship with Talon was particularly complex and compelling. The torture scenes were genuinely distressing and I felt strong empathy toward Arlena. There was an overwhelming sense of grief and loss when she returned to find the kingdom had moved on without her. I liked the fact that her generous spirit and willingness to see the best in all creatures were pivotal to the plot. The perspectives of long-lived, short-lived, and mid-lived beings were beautifully delineated and contributed to world-building. I was surprised and intrigued to learn that long-lived races could be the most heedless instead of the wisest but found the logic convincing. The Vow That Twisted Fate by Katherine D. Graham provides a unique perspective and creates a dark and persuasive fairy story."

Check Out What I Read For Reedsy Discovery in November 2022

Check out what I read for Reedsy Discovery in November 2022!

I found a five-star and a four-star read this month, each from amazing fantasy authors:
Picture
The Dominion: Destiny by Chris Cloake
Epic Fantasy
4-Star "Loved It"

With the sacrifice of the person he loves most being the only way to save his people in an insurmountable war, Rupert challenges fate...

Rupert is facing impossible odds.

Gaticus, his arch nemesis and a foe who will only be satisfied with the extinction of humanity across the globe, holds the high ground in every way. Only one goal supersedes this villain's desire for world domination: Rupert's sister. And Rupert is not about to let his sister die if there is another living being with breath to protect her.

In a heart-wrenching, breath-stealing fashion of utter darkness along the lines of a Helm's Deep moment from Lord of the Rings, the devastating realities of war, loss, and fragile, unpromised recoveries, The Dominion: Destiny is a tale that pulls you in right away and doesn't let you go... The First Assignment by Billy Kramer
YA Dark Fantasy
5-Star "Must Read"

When Shawn awakens from a mysterious death as a reaper, can he accept his new role as required? Or will he die again to save a mortal soul?

Shawn doesn't know how he died, but he knows he can die again. That is, unless he accepts the role of 'Reaper', and takes others' souls himself.

Swept up into an undead academy of twisted secrets, ancient traditions, and conflicting morals, Shawn only wants to survive his second (and final) life. The rules for his contract are simple. Do the job. Don't interact with living humans. Don't be late. Easy, right?

Until a living girl who shouldn't be able to see him suddenly can exactly that--and not just Shawn, she can see ALL the reapers. Facing someone who sees and understands their plight, Shawn must decide whether to follow his duty, or follow his gut... (Read More)

Book Review of Eighteen Wishes: A Realm of Darkness Box Set Novel by C.K. Sorens

9/15/2022

Picture
With the Realm of Darkness box set coming out on October 4th (only 19 days away!!), I've dived into some of the books my peers have written for the set.

First-up is my book review of Eighteen Wishes: a Realm of Darkness box set novel by C.K. Sorens (author of the YA Fantasy series "Trimarked").

Eighteen Wishes at a glance:

5/5 Stars
Genre: Urban Paranormal Romance
Featuring: Djinn, Genies, and the Hunters who track them down
Age Range: Upper YA and New Adult
Steam Level: 3 out of 5
Eighteen Wishes is a debut novel in a whole new series by Sorens, marrying the best aspects of the writing style I saw in her Trimarked series into a fresh new series for an audience who doesn't shy away from deep questions.

The main character begins the story as a Genie trying to find her away around a curse. Tied by her curse to a single family of what were once warlocks, she must serve the firstborn son (by granting wishes) of each generation for a year beginning the day he turns 18.

If she can grant 18 wishes for him within that year, she will free herself from the curse and return to being one of her own kind: an elite djinn hunter.

There's only one problem: if she breaks her curse, all other genies will be freed as well--something the Djinn-hunter cannot allow to happen.

Eighteen Wishes hooked me from the very beginning. Sorens has definitely upped her writing game with unpredictable twists, deep questions about duty, responsibility, and freedom (and the cost that freedom entails). The characters will tug at your heart-strings, and as the story goes on the lines between black and white blur into a gray that forces contemplation on who is deciding on justice and why.

In the midst of all the action, travel, and adventures to other planes of existence, true love has a way of winding its way through the most unlikely of hearts in a very powerful way.

Eighteen Wishes is a solid 5/5 for me in dynamic world-building, deep characters, a realistic romance, and high-stakes action. I would definitely recommend making Sorens' newest novel one of your first picks when the Realm of Darkness box set hits your e-readers on October 4th.

Books I Gave 5-Star Reviews To: Summer 2021

9/26/2021

With the fall upon us (bringing loads of new fall releases to read), I want to share the list of books I gave 5-star reviews to: summer 2021.

Anyone who knows me from a reviewing standpoint knows that I don't hand out many 5-star reviews. A book really has to go above and beyond, blowing me away, to break out of the "Loved It" (4-star) and into "Must-Read" (5-star). I am known for being blatantly honest with my reviews, and I will link my review to each book below in case you'd like to read it in full.

Many of these books I found courtesy of Reedsy Discovery, although some were reads from fellow authors in my Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter writing community.

TwinFlames: One Of My Five-Star Reads In 2021

6/3/2021

Picture
Today I am excited, because I can finally share about TwinFlames: one of my five-star reads in 2021!

TwinFlames is the third volume in Nicole Wells' "Five Elements" series, and believe me when I say this is one you won't want to miss!

Without further ado, here is my review for TwinFlames:

---Review As Posted On My Goodreads Account HERE--

It is said that the third time's a charm. That cannot be more true than it is with TwinFlames by Nicole Wells. UpSpark (volume 1 of the Five Elements series) was sweet, deep, and intriguing. StarDust (volume 2 of the series) introduced us to the conflict to come, with intriguing travels around the world and lore for the series. TwinFlames (volume 3 of the series) marries the best of both worlds, while preparing us for what is bound to be one of the most epic battles in the Science Fantasy scene.

Maia is a fighting prodigy but is not in the ring for fame or money. One thing is on her mind: revenge.

When the mysterious, tall, dark, and handsome Gabe--the notoriously famous "Angel" in the fighting world--swoops into Maia's life, his passion and drive to save her from being another youth snuffed out in reckless fighting turns Maia's search on its head.

It's only when Maia teleports herself stark-nude to a park in France with a power unknown to her that she learns of a power far more deadly than the rapist she's spent her days tracking down--a power that can end the entire world.

Swept into a passionate love with Gabe and helped by mysterious friends, Maia must hone her newfound powers and lead the rising "Elements" to protect humanity and the Earth from enemies far beyond their natural ability.

TwinFlames was a page-turning read chalk full of emotions often left off the table. Pride, pain, self-righteousness, social responsibility, self-identity, vengeance, and failure abound but are balanced by love in all its forms.

TwinFlames is far more than just an action-packed book or fiery romance; it is a book that made me take a look at myself and see parts of myself I usually try to ignore, and bring hope to aspects of my life I once thought long-forgotten.

A perfect 5/5 on this one - I cannot recommend it highly enough. Wells is definitely a master storyteller, and I can't wait to read volume 4!

--Trigger warnings: Mental & physical abuse mentioned/detailed, contemplations of murder, mentions of police brutality (aimed specifically at race), mention of rape, war and execution, institutionalized mental breakdown/illness discussed, mention of infant loss.--
